Brief Encounters

Quick, intense, fresh, gestural, limited palette, location paintings. Designed to hone my muscle memory, fluidity and observational skills. Attempting to capture a moment from life onto a panel within 20 minutes or less.

Gear is minimal; one brush, a palette knife, a rag, thinners, a panel, a hand-held pochade box. Pre-squeezed Michael Harding paint; white, unbleached titanium dioxide, ultramarine blue, cadmium yellow lemon, cadmium golden yellow, cadmium red deep, plus an occasional addition, maybe brilliant pink, king’s blue. No backup tubes; make it work with what there is.

I will try to do several sessions a week, but not on a fixed schedule. The goal will not be primarily to make a painting, but more to capture the essence of something.
